Netflix Unveils Trailer for Dave Chappelle’s Latest Comedy Special, “The Dreamer”

Narrated by Morgan Freeman, the trailer features Freeman alongside Chappelle, with Freeman encouraging viewers to embrace their dreams.

“The Dreamer,” filmed at the Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C., is Chappelle’s seventh comedy special with Netflix. Stan Lathan, who directed Chappelle’s previous six specials for the streaming platform, also directs “The Dreamer.”

Chappelle faced controversy following his 2021 Netflix special “The Closer,” where he made jokes about transgender people, resulting in company walkouts in October of that year. Initially, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos defended the comedian, stating that Chappelle is “one of the most popular stand-up comedians today” and that Netflix supports their talent’s creative freedom, even if it means hosting content that some find harmful. However, Sarandos later admitted he “screwed up” in his response to the backlash against Chappelle.

Chappelle’s previous Netflix specials comprise “The Age of Spin” (2017), “Deep in the Heart of Texas” (2017), “Equanimity” (2017), “The Bird Revelation” (2017), “Sticks & Stones” (2019), and “The Closer” (2021).

“Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer” will premiere globally on Netflix on December 31st.
