It’s a disappointment for fans of “Heartstopper.”

Emmy-winning actress Olivia Colman has announced she won’t be returning for the third season of Netflix’s British coming-out comedy.

“I couldn’t commit to the third season due to scheduling conflicts. It’s unfortunate, and I feel terrible about it,” said Colman, who played Sarah Nelson, mother to Nick Nelson (Kit Connor), in an interview with Forbes published on Thursday. “Being part of this project was one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had.”

Series creator Alice Oseman addressed the news on her Instagram Story, expressing that the production made every effort to bring Colman back for the role but ultimately couldn’t make it happen. She acknowledged that such disappointments are a reality in the television industry.

Oseman, the author behind the “Heartstopper” graphic novels that inspired the beloved LGBTQ-themed comedy, has confirmed that the role of Sarah will not be recast following Olivia Colman’s departure. She also reassured devoted fans of the series not to lose faith, particularly in regards to a pivotal scene involving Nick and his mother from the graphic novel, which is expected to be addressed in the upcoming third season.

In a heartfelt message spanning four parts, Oseman expressed her dedication to preserving the essence of that scene from the comic while incorporating new elements into the storyline to ensure its emotional impact remains intact. She emphasized that Nick’s narrative from the comics remains integral to the show and indicated that the emotional support previously provided by Sarah will be transitioned to other characters for the time being. Oseman concluded her message by expressing her hope for Olivia Colman’s return if the series is granted a fourth season.

Joe Locke, William Gao, and Yasmin Finney are among the show’s main cast, with further casting announcements expected soon.
